Pictures can say a thousand words and perhaps can even save your life — especially when those pictures show major arteries in your body.

Those who attend the Women’s Information Network’s fifth annual health fair from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. March 31 at The Forum can get an “artery portrait,” thanks to Redmond Regional Medical Center’s new Angio-screen technology.

It will take pre-registered individuals only about 15 minutes to undergo the diagnostic procedure at a reduced rate.

Angio-screen helps to check for irregular heart rhythms, blood pressure levels, plaque and, most importantly, blockages in neck and leg arteries through colorized ultrasound pictures. Normally the service is $50, but it will be offered to pre-registered attendees at a discounted rate of $35.

“This is definitely something to take advantage of. It could save your life,” said Kay Dixon, Redmond Occupational Health’s marketing manager and WIN member.

“People are given the chance to look at their vascular health and are able to see what exactly is going on and are given a print-out they can discuss with their primary care physician. It’s a tool to be used not necessary to diagnose but to identify risks for heart attack or stroke,” Dixon said

At the health fair, there will also be several free screenings available, including blood sugar, bone density, cholesterol, hearing, blood pressure, skin cancer and prostate cancer.

Spring Training is an annual WIN effort to involve Floyd Countians in more active, healthy lifestyles. Both individuals and teams are challenged to participate in various health-conscious activities including everything from quitting smoking for a day, to installing a smoke detector, to donating blood. Those who complete the challenge are then registered to compete for the Grand Slam/Grand Prize of $1,000.

New to this year, WIN will also be hosting “Dancing on the Diamond.” The dance will be held at the Barron Stadium Annex at 300 West Third Street on March 31, starting at 7 p.m. Ballpark refreshments will be served at the dance, along with free dance instruction by Berry College dance instructor Jeanne Schul.

“We wanted to have a fun event that would get people excited about spring training this year,” said Sharon Baker, WIN president.

Dance tickets are $8 per person and $5 for students, and are available at the Senior Adult Recreation Center and WRGA Radio.
