The
Walgreens Experience
On February 18, 2004, ACA entered into an agreement with
Walgreens Co. to establish a Pilot Program for the
AngioScreen ®
in their stores in the greater Nashville area. The Pilot
Program began as planned on May 4, 2004 with coverage of
over 40 Walgreens stores in the Nashville area.Walgreens
has characterized the Pilot Program as their most successful
retail pharmacy pilot ever based on store traffic and
customer exit interview feedback. A total of 2,901
individuals, or an average of 24 per day, had AngioScreens ®
performed throughout a 20-week period ending on September
18, 2004. Average weekly screenings increased to 163, Screenings
ran as high as 55 in a single day.
The data from the Pilot Program confirms and
underscores the significant importance of ACA's mission to
inform consumers with increased knowledge and awareness of
their risk for heart disease and stroke.
In summary:
62% were overweight or obese based on
their Weight, Height, and Body Mass Index. These individuals
are at risk for diabetes, heart attack and stroke.
28% indicated the presence of carotid artery plaque, a
leading indicator of the risk for heart disease and stroke.
15% of all strokes are caused by plaque build-up in the
carotid artery..
20% indicated blood
pressure levels consistent with Stage 1 or Stage 2
Hypertension. Americans with uncontrolled high blood
pressure and three times more likely to have a heart attack
and seven times more like to have a stroke.
4.4% indicated Peripheral Artery Disease.
Americans with
blockages in their leg arteries are 2 to 4 times more likely thave a heart attack than the general population. More than
10 million Americans have PAD, and 90% are unaware of their
condition.
2.2% indicated Atrial Fibrillation, a rapid and irregular
heart beat. More than 10 million Americans have A Fib, a
serious condition which significantly increases the risk of
heart attack or stroke.
Angiology Corporation was asked to stay in the Tennessee Walgreens
stores through the Winter of 2004.
